This popular tourist destination is Africa’s smallest nation. A former British colony, its President Yahya Jammeh, who took power in a coup in 1994, remains in power and is unlikely to loosen his grip any time soon. An underlying paranoia is confirmed by media groups, which have said that his administration routinely restricts press freedom. Journalists are frequently arrested and in the past some have disappeared. Ebrima “Chief” Manneh was one of these. This is the political backdrop, and with much of the population with very little, living hand-to-mouth on a daily basis, the people live life through their hearts.
