I travelled to The Gambia twice, in 2007 and 2008, during a period of political restriction under President Yahya Jammeh's autocratic rule. Press freedom was routinely suppressed; journalists were arrested and some disappeared. Yet despite the underlying paranoia and economic hardship that forced many to live hand to mouth, the people of The Gambia carried on with dignity and resilience. The photographs document everyday life—moments of connection, community, and the quiet strength of people navigating difficult circumstances. They are a record of humanity enduring, of how people find meaning and sustenance in each other when systems fail them.
